Parcours des Mondes 2016

Thanks to the number, quality, and variety of its participants, Parcours des Mondes is presently the world’s leading international tribal art fair. Every year since 2002, it has brought together an ever-increasing number of galleries with specialties in the arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. With its ongoing success as a firm foundation, this year’s show will include Asian art, a field that has had relatively little representation in Paris until now. Parcours des Mondes is now the most important international event for both tribal and Asian art. This year, half of the participants will come from abroad. They will include galleries from Belgium, the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand, and other parts of France, and will join their Parisian counterparts who maintain a permanent presence in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood. This exceptional gathering of experts and artworks takes place at multiple venues, the participants being located in galleries all at most a short stroll from one another. Visitors to the show experience an unparalleled selection of art offerings as they walk the charming and picturesque streets of this historical neighborhood, which has become the world capital for tribal art. Each gallery offers an individualized and intimate presentation of often-unknown masterpieces from Africa, Oceania, the Americas, or Asia. These range from easily affordable ethnographic works to rare and coveted artworks much sought after by collectors. The fair’s success hinges on a combination of complementary elements: the healthy state of the tribal art market, an ever increasing interest in the arts it represents, the efforts made by dealers to produce high-quality thematic exhibitions, and those made by the fair’s vigilant management to ensure that the highest standards are upheld. Parcours des Mondes is rigorous in its selection of dealers it includes and of the material they display.

This year, more than two dozen galleries have chosen to participate in the event which will bring together both thematic exhibitions and exceptional pieces. All fields of tribal art will be explored : Arts of Africa , America, the Himalayas , Indonesia and Oceania. Here, masks meet shields, clubs meet ancestor figures, musical instruments and ornaments echo the drums, scepters and spatulas intersect to form an endless inventory where ritual items, now works of art make a tribute to the history of our origins.

Parcours des Mondes 2015

Parcours des mondes is the most important show of tribal art by quality and diversity of its participants. Since 2002, it gathers each year in Paris sixty galleries specializing in the arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. During the second week of September, German, American, British, Australian, Belgian, Canadian, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Swiss galleries join their colleagues in Paris permanently settled in the Fine Arts neighbourhood in St. Germain-des-Prés. This exceptional concentration of works and experts is an open-doors fair where visitors can mingle and wander through the streets of this historic district. Each gallery offers an intimate and personalized presentation of great masterpieces from Africa or Oceania, ethnographic works of more affordable price and other pieces sought after by collectors. The success of this dynamic outdoor fair is clear from the good media coverage, and the ever growing and more international attendance and can be explained by the good health of the tribal arts market, a stronger interest amongst art lovers in general for these lesser known arts, the extra efforts made by the dealers to propose interesting thematic shows with high quality objects and, the vigilance of the organizers in terms of quality and vetting of the exhibited pieces.

Paris Tribal: 26 Parisian galleries create a new event that confirms the place of Paris as capital of tribal arts
The tribal arts are fascinating because of the way they tell a story that can often only be grasped in its outline and that reveals only part of its secrets. This appetite for tribal art, which is widespread in Europe and the USA, is developing throughout the whole world.

Through exhibitions based around themes, and with exceptional pieces, Paris Tribal is to uncover its treasures within a broad, transversal view of tribal arts: Arts from Africa, America, Asia, Indonesia and Oceania, among others.

I am pleased and proud to be presenting Oceanic Art and early Eskimo Art for the 16th straight year at TEFAF.
On this occasion I will be offering a group of art-works selected for their remarkable forms and for their sculptural qualities. ”Form” and “Sculpture” do go together and while we often think of tribal art as mostly figurative representations we really should look a bit further and explore the artistic process of research and innovation that Oceanic artists used to define and ultimately refine the shapes and forms of both the mundane and the sacred.

A catalogue will be published for the occasion with a total of 30 selected works of art.

Walkabout - the early art of Australian aborigines

Discover the pictures from the event

The exhibition “WALKABOUT - The early art of the Australian Aborigines” at Galerie Meyer - Oceanic Art will offer some 200 pieces from three private European collections.
The inauguration will take place during the opening of PARCOURS des MONDES - the world's most important Tribal Art fair which takes place in the galleries of Saint Germain-des-Prés every September in Paris.
Early Aboriginal Works-of-Art are of an absolute Minimalism - their form is reduced to the necessity of their function - and they are often multifunctional. The extreme simplicity of shape is enhanced with an incised and/ or painted decor which is almost exclusively geometric representing highly stylized human and animal forms.
As most of the tribes or language groups are nomadic, they cannot deal with large quantities of ceremonial or functional belongings - thus over the millennia the Aborigines have “Condensed to the Maximum” their art, retaining only the bare essentials needed to sustain their physical and spiritual lives.
Their spiritual world is contained and concentrated in their very selves and is represented in ephemeral sand drawings, on bark paintings and in rock art. The inspiration is drawn from a “Dreamtime” in which the initiated men source religious knowledge and communicate with their ancestors and the spirits through dreams.
Made of wood, stone, shell, and all manner of animal and vegetable materials, the boomerangs, spear- throwers, bull-roarers, shields, spears and adornments are of a disconcerting simplicity - far removed from the baroque sculptural works-of-art from the other areas of the Pacific.
Aboriginal Art is an art of Design - it is an art of perfection. For those who can see beyond the apparent simplicity, there is remarkable beauty to be found not only in the pure form but in the treatment of surfaces and in the refined and elaborate incised and painted decorations.
These beautiful works of art were recognized and sought after by the artists of the 20th century such as Sir Jacob Epstein, Karel Kupka, André Breton, Tony Tuckson, and Klaus Rinke to name but a few. Through the eyes of these collectors the Early Art of the Australian Aborigines has gone from being but simple tools and weapons to an art equal to that of the Modern and Classical world.
There will be a selection of very fine archaic Eskimo Art on display as well.

Biennale des Antiquaires

This prestigious show brings together the leading French and foreign dealers, big-spending collectors and sharp-eyed amateurs. It offers a unique panorama of several centuries of art. Amateurs of furniture, tapestries, ceramics, and old paintings are sure to find something to their taste among all the items on display, from the primitive arts to modern painting, via the eighteenth century, Art déco and the 1950s.
Since 1956, the Biennale des antiquaires has been organised by the French national antique dealers' association (Syndicat national des antiquaires). Initially a yearly event, it became biennial and, in this format, elected its home for the first edition at the Grand Palais in 1962.
Karl Lagerfeld, top man at Chanel, has been selected as ‘scenographer’ for this year’s Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris. The designer will stage and decorate the Grand Palais for the Biennale, which takes place from 14th - 23rd September, and provide a sumptuous backdrop for the art, antiques, and refined Parisian shoppers searching for one-off objets d’art.
